Why is Fifth Third Bank called that?

Q. Why does Fifth Third Bank have that strange name? What does it mean?

Adam answers:

In 1908, the Fifth National Bank merged with the Third National Bank to form the Fifth Third National Bank of Cincinnati, so you can already see where this is going. That bank had another merger in 1927 to become Fifth Third Union Trust Company. In 1969, it was renamed simply Fifth Third Bank and the 5/3 logo was also introduced.

I was unable to find any information on why the Fifth National Bank won out over the Third National Bank to be mentioned first in the name. I can’t decide if Fifth Third Bank is better or worse than Third Fifth Bank, but I think we can all agree that both names are rather ridiculous.
